Community Consulting Lab
Develop your skills and deliver business expertise to local entrepreneurs
The Community Consulting Lab is a unique, eight-week hands-on, fully supported, consulting experience and business accelerator program open to Johns Hopkins graduate students, including Carey Business School, and businesses of the Greater Baltimore and DMV area.
Through a collaborative, matched partnership, student participants will apply their business toolkit and knowledge to assist a local small business, startup, or nonprofit.
CCL’s core focus is to empower student consultants by serving business owners and entrepreneurs in ways that strengthen their business trajectory and confidence to generate revenue and impact.
Program outcomes as a student consultant:
- Develop and refine key consulting skills, including business communication and strategic planning
- Manage client relationships to grow local economies while participating in effecting teaming
- Discover innovative problem-solving techniques to deliver solutions with impact
Deliver business expertise to local entrepreneurs.
The Community Consulting Lab has had over 4,000 hours committed to service and learning each year. Students have partnered with small businesses in industries like health and nutrition, technology, graphic design, clothing and apparel, education, and social impact.
Past participating companies have included Black Girls Eat, Envision Creative A.R.T, Full Blast STEAM, CLLCTIVLY, Mindstand Technologies, and DIFFERENTREGARD.
Graduate students from all Johns Hopkins disciplines participate in the Community Consulting Lab.

Program Details:
One-hour weekly coaching session led by Will Holmes, Founder, WHC; Chairman Emeritus, Baltimore City Chamber of Commerce; Founder, Baltimore Economic Leadership League
One-hour weekly consulting session with a small business client (cadence may vary)
One-on-one consulting mentor sessions with Will Holmes
Seven full weeks of coaching sessions leading up to the CCL showcase
One week of final preparation

What makes Discovery to Market unique?
- We focus on commercialization and entrepreneurship as a means to meet societal needs. By creating a successful business model, a technology can be brought to market for medical, scientific, and humanitarian purposes.
- Students learn critical aspects of science and the fundamentals of the technology commercialization process that moves innovations from the lab to the marketplace.
- Students bring diverse cultural, professional, and business backgrounds. They pool their knowledge to understand the technical aspects of each engagement.
- Working in teams, students determine the feasibility of commercializing real scientific inventions such as biomarkers, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and biologics, and health IT.
- Industry experts in entrepreneurship, law and regulation, technology, strategy, science, and medicine advise student teams throughout the project.
- Our working agreements with project partners allow students to work on real inventions, not theoretical cases.
Johns Hopkins Carey Business School works closely with the National Institutes of Health. Students work on projects from the National Cancer Institute.

Joe Demasco has more than 30 years of experience as a software engineering practitioner and management consultant to private and public sector organizations around the globe. Joe has held industry positions at Bell Laboratories, where he worked on systems engineering projects, and at Ernst & Young, where he directed the operations research consulting group.
