Pedro (Pete) Aceves, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and is a Fellow of the Knowledge Lab at the University of Chicago. What makes Discovery to Market unique?
- We focus on commercialization and entrepreneurship as a means to meet societal needs. By creating a successful business model, a technology can be brought to market for medical, scientific, and humanitarian purposes.
- Students learn critical aspects of science and the fundamentals of the technology commercialization process that moves innovations from the lab to the marketplace.
- Students bring diverse cultural, professional, and business backgrounds. They pool their knowledge to understand the technical aspects of each engagement.
- Working in teams, students determine the feasibility of commercializing real scientific inventions such as biomarkers, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and biologics, and health IT.
- Industry experts in entrepreneurship, law and regulation, technology, strategy, science, and medicine advise student teams throughout the project.
- Our working agreements with project partners allow students to work on real inventions, not theoretical cases.
Johns Hopkins Carey Business School works closely with the National Institutes of Health. Students work on projects from the National Cancer Institute.

Joe Demasco has more than 30 years of experience as a software engineering practitioner and management consultant to private and public sector organizations around the globe. Joe has held industry positions at Bell Laboratories, where he worked on systems engineering projects, and at Ernst & Young, where he directed the operations research consulting group. He has also served as a supervisor with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, where he developed and taught online courses in computer science. Step out of the classroom and your comfort zone to embark on a one-day field experience, transforming your own leadership and problem-solving abilities while creating meaningful impact in your community. Each course is an individual session.

Past Impact Sprints
Farm-to-Business
Spend a day working on a sustainable farm and collaborate with the farm staff to learn firsthand about local agribusiness’ opportunities and obstacles. Work on a team to present business solutions for the farm’s real-world problems.
Lead Outside the Box
Spend the day with senior program leaders at Outward Bound to better understand your assumptions and ideas about what it takes to lead. Use low and high ropes course and other group exercises to improve communication, collaboration, and problem solving.
Diagnosing Business Problems
Spend an overnight shift in the emergency department, embed with the emergency care team, and experience the effects of a hospital’s business obstacles on the quality of patient care firsthand. Present your findings to improve performance and patient care in the Johns Hopkins emergency department.
