Testimonials from Beet Week Sneak Peek By Kamille Little
Every April, the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School celebrates Beet Week, a multi-day celebration honoring graduating students and the philanthropic legacy of William P. Carey, the school’s benefactor. Last month, students gathered at Carey’s locations in Washington, D.C., and Harbor East for the Beet Week Sneak Peek event.
The nights offered students an early look at the Beet Week celebration, where students and staff learned about the history of Beet Week while mingling over refreshments and having their portraits drawn by caricature artists. Amongst the festivities, a philanthropy booth invited students to make their first gift to Carey. Donors received a thank you gift from the school and were asked to share their motivations for giving back.
Flexible MBA student Patrick Blackmon resonates deeply with the school’s mission. “From my two years in the Flexible MBA program, I noticed how much Carey gives back to local communities, whether it be schools, start-ups, or local nonprofits. They really do a great job of understanding it’s a lot more than just the students–it’s the surrounding communities that drive this program to make it successful,” Blackmon said. MBA candidate Andy Charlorin said philanthropy has had a direct impact on him as a full scholarship recipient.
“Carey is currently very instrumental in where I’m going in my life, so for any of the students who want to walk through Carey, I’d like to give them that same opportunity,” said Charlorin. As Beet Week approaches beginning on April 21, students will have more opportunities to embrace Beet Week’s charitable mission through interactive activities and meaningful discussions. Whether you give your time, resources, or voice, every contribution makes a difference. How will you pay it forward?

Behind the beet
The simple sugar beet is a profound metaphor of Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and its benefactor, William P. Carey’s commitment to advancing society. In the 1940s and 1950s, Colorado and Kansas farmers grew sugar beets for the National Sugar Manufacturing Company. William P. Carey’s family was a minority stockholder in the company for decades. Due to global price wars, the company was forced to liquidate in 1966, leaving farmers to absorb their losses.
At the time, a young Carey, whose $50 million gift would later establish Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in 2007, was not in a financial position to aid the farmers, but he never forgot their plight. Although not legally responsible for the debts, he pledged to make the situation whole.
Twenty years later, after contacting every one of the 80 farming families involved, William P. Carey repaid the $250,000 debt in full. Responsibility. Integrity. Dedication. Humanity. These are the cornerstones of Beet Week as embodied by the actions of our benefactor and the mission of Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.
