Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is committed to your student success as well as your safety. We want you to have a safe and productive learning environment, and that starts with you. We encourage you to follow these safety tips and be sure you are connected to our Homewood Public Safety as well.  

Safety checklist for students

• Program the Public Safety emergency number in your phone: 410-234-9301 for Harbor East or 202-663-5808 for Washington DC.
• Download the free LiveSafe app to your phone. Users can Purchase a U-Lock to secure your bike. U-Locks provide call, text, and submit tips to Public Safety in real time - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• Never respond to a request for personal or financial information that you didn’t anticipate. Never pay some-one who insists on receiving gift cards or wired money.
• Visit the JHU Public Safety website to review crime prevention tips.
• Behavioral Health Crisis Support Team: BHCST provides immediate assistance and support to students in crisis. Call 410-516-WELL or visit JHU Student Well-Being.
• Access Blue Jay Shuttles through the TransLoc app. Users can track shuttles and request pickups via the app or by visiting ondemand.transloc.com.
• Purchase a U-Lock to secure your bike. U-Locks provide a higher level of security than cable locks.
• Photograph valuables and note serial numbers. This information is important if valuables are missing. Register your valuables with Public Safety
• Install computer locating software This security feature is helpful in tracking missing devices
• Office of Institutional Equity: OIE is a valuable resource for victims, as they investigate reports of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct. Visit OIE for more information.

If you are in an emergency off-campus

• Immediately comply with demands and give up your property, don't give up your life.
• Call 911 immediately and seek out the police
• Contact Carey.Security@jhu.edu to report the incident after you are safe

Student Impact Teams: Defined

Student Impact Teams are a key initiative led by the Strategic Partnerships & Student Innovations (SPSI) Office at the Carey Business School. Student Innovations at Carey are co-curricular experiences and pathways to gain real-world experience and grow your network. This is a space for consultation, creation, and connection, and the Student Impact Teams embody this spirit by co-creating large-scale events—such as conferences and case competitions—in collaboration with Carey staff, faculty, and key external stakeholders. 

These teams offer students the opportunity to lead from concept to execution, while building skills that reflect the excellence of Carey Business School. 

Gaining Experience & Professional Development 

Each team focuses on skill development and professional growth throughout the project lifecycle. Members will engage in pre-work such as role-based training and team building, followed by real-time project work. Dedicated time will be reserved for post-event reflection and process debriefing to ensure this is an intentional, growth-centered experience. 

Team Responsibilities 

• Defining the event scope, goals, and strategic approach
• Setting milestones and managing timelines
• Developing the event theme and key components with Carey stakeholders
• Identifying desired external participants (speakers, judges, sponsors, etc.)*
• Compiling outreach lists and managing contact communications*
• Collaborating with SPSI on logistics, budgeting, and marketing
• Leading day-of-event execution, including volunteer coordination 

• Participating in post-event debrief and assessment

Participant Commitment: 

• Weekly Time Commitment: ~3–4 hours/week (will increase closer to event date)
• Meetings:
  • Weekly team meetings (more frequent near the event)
  • Periodic meetings with stakeholders (e.g., Employer Relations, Development, Alumni Relations, and sponsors)
• Expectations:
  • Full participation through project completion, including post-event reflection
  • Flexibility, collaboration, and commitment to excellence
  • Professionalism with a growth mindset—perfection isn’t expected, but strong effort is

• Apply between August 1st – September 5th, 2025  (application now open!)
• Interviews: Conducted during the week of September 8 for top candidates
• Team Formation: Final teams selected by September 12th, 2025
   (Note: The AstraZeneca Case Competition team may be finalized earlier)

Big Data Consulting Project

Big data comes in high volume, velocity, and variety. But it’s not the amount or type of data that transforms businesses, it’s what businesses do with the data that drives the bottom line

A business partner will pose a business challenge to the class for the Big Data Consulting Project, along with a large dataset for analysis. Then students work in teams to analyze the data, derive managerial insights, and use their findings to present creative solutions to business challenges and opportunities.

Applying analytic techniques

To best address the business’ challenge, student teams work through three stages: describing data patterns and trends, using the data to predict outcomes, and compiling the analyses to form actionable recommendations for the project sponsor.

Students use a combination of data visualization tools (such as Tableau or Hadoop), programming languages for analysis (such as R or Python), and spreadsheet simulation and optimization tools (such as @Risk and Excel Solver).

Presenting the findings

Each student team will deliver two presentations to the business partner involved in the course, once at the project’s midpoint and again at completion. The midpoint presentation enables the teams to obtain early feedback from the business partner and make adjustments and course corrections as needed. At the final presentation, each team of students will present their findings. This includes an actionable plan for the business to use the findings and address real-world business constraints including bandwidth, skills, and budget. In parallel, students will submit a technical report to the course faculty.
