A native of Willingboro, NJ, Sandra E. Brooks, MD, MBA, recently joined Jefferson Health as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, Center City Division. Trained in OB-Gyn at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Gynecologic Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Dr. Brooks also served as Professor and Director of the Division of Gynecology Oncology at the University of Maryland for 10 years where in addition to clinical practice, teaching, and mentoring trainees, her research focused on health services and cancer disparities.
Dr. Brooks received her MBA in Medical Services Management at Johns Hopkins University prior to transitioning to a physician executive role in Louisville where she developed a multi-modal prevention program and service line focused on expanding access to screening, and promoting health equity. Dr. Brooks has had an enduring programmatic and research interest in reducing health services and promotion of health equity as exemplified in her role as principal investigator of one of 21 National Cancer Institute Community Cancer Center Programs focused on promoting health equity, quality, clinical trials, and survivorship.
Prior to her move to Philadelphia, Dr. Brooks was Chief Medical Officer of a multi-site, multi-specialty health network in NJ and Chief Medical Officer of St. Joseph’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital, BayCare, Health System in Tampa, Florida, where she accomplished major initiatives focused on patient safety and quality. Dr. Brooks’ national work has included serving on boards of the American Public Health Association and as Co-Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists.
Joining the Jefferson Health System just prior to the pandemic, Dr. Brooks quickly became integral to the Center City Division leadership team and pandemic response. Dr. Brooks is deeply engaged in promoting vaccination efforts. Dr. Brooks was recently named the Executive Vice President, Chief Community Health Equity Officer, and will lead Philadelphia Collaborative for Health Equity and Center for Urban Health, in addition to her role as Chief Medical Officer for Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals.
