Prospective students have two pathways for pursuing the MBA/MA in International Relations dual degree:
- Apply to Both Programs Simultaneously
You may apply to both the Full-time MBA at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and the MA in International Relations (MAIR) at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at the same time. If admitted to both programs, you will work closely with academic advisors from both schools to customize the sequence of your studies—choosing the order that best aligns with your professional goals and maximizes opportunities at each school. - Apply to the Second Program as a Current Student
If you are already enrolled in either the Full-time MBA or the MAIR program, you may apply to the other program during your first year of study to pursue the dual degree. This option allows current students to expand their academic and professional focus while leveraging the strengths of both schools.
Regardless of the pathway you choose, you must submit separate applications to each school and meet the individual admissions requirements. Please review the application instructions for the Full-time MBA and the MA in International Relations.

To pursue the MD/MBA dual degree, you must first be admitted to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (SOM). There are two pathways to enter the dual degree program:
Option 1: Apply during MD Admissions
On the JHU SOM secondary application, you’ll be asked whether you are interested in the MD/MBA dual degree program. This indication is non-binding and does not affect your medical school admission decision. If admitted to the MD program and you’ve indicated interest in the MBA, your materials will be shared with Carey Business School for review. Carey guarantees admission to students accepted into the MD program who express interest in the dual degree.
Students admitted to both programs will decide whether to pursue the MBA between years 2–3 or years 3–4 of the MD program. Admission to the MBA will be deferred to the appropriate start term.
Option 2: Apply as a Current MD Student
If you decide to pursue the dual degree after beginning the MD program, you may still apply during year 2 or 3. Students in this situation can complete the MBA between years 2–3 or 3–4 of the MD program. To begin the process, notify your SOM advisor. You’ll then be referred to Carey to complete the MBA application. The Carey MBA Admissions Committee will review your materials for admission.
To apply, visit the School of Medicine application page.
