GLOBAL PROGRAM PROVIDES A MOTIVATION 'TO MAKE THINGS BETTER'

Mauro Gurdulich had a good thing in Argentina. After nine years at Anheuser-Busch InBev, Mauro worked his way up to sales manager overseeing one of the sales operations in the country. All of this at his early thirties. However, despite his success, Mauro was eager for more.

“Our friends were talking about their next car, or their next European vacation – and my wife and I were talking about how we were going to scale our careers,” Mauro said. “So we figured we wanted to do something different, and that’s why we decided to come to the U.S.”

Mauro’s wife landed a research job at Johns Hopkins Hospital, bringing the pair to the Mid-Atlantic. As Mauro looked for business schools in the area, he began to notice one stand out from the others: the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

“From all the business schools in the area I looked at, I felt that Carey and Johns Hopkins were offering something different,” said Mauro, who enrolled in Carey’s Global MBA program. “In addition to being part of a world-renowned institution at Johns Hopkins, I felt other business schools were offering a commodity – a way into consulting or investment banking. That path didn’t feel right to me. I wanted to do something to make things better.”

Mauro said this motivation was kindled in him years before while working at AB InBev. He felt Carey’s purpose “to teach business with humanity in mind” fit with his thoughts and beliefs about business and management.

“What it means for me is taking care of people – really understanding their goals and dreams,” he said. “Dreams are a beautiful thing in life. My experiences made it clear that it was good to dream, but it is better to have a plan because a plan makes dreams achievable.”

Mauro’s plan included an MBA. And not just any MBA, he wanted an education with a global focus that would expose him to a diversity of thoughts and views. He said at Carey he’s found that through the curriculum and his classmates. Mauro said he’s met people that have accomplished things he “has only seen in movies.”

“I have classmates that are scientists, health care professionals, nonprofit workers, and of course those from a wide range of business backgrounds,” he said. “That kind of diversity is invaluable to me. It pushes forward creativity.”

Mauro added that the highlight of the Global MBA program has been Innovation for Humanity (I4H), a project where Global MBA students consult for a developing world business or organization. The program culminates in a three-week site visit to the business, located in countries like Rwanda, India, and Peru.

“I4H is a game-changer,” he said. “It is an amazing experience and it continues to fuel the global mindset you develop here. It’s one of the many reasons I am happy I chose Carey.”
