Inspiring Healthcare Leaders for What's Next
The Healthcare Business Association (HBA) was founded in 2012 and has since built an integrated network of highly successful healthcare leaders within and outside the business school. The alumni of the group are represented in all types of roles and industries within the vast and ever-changing healthcare space. Join us today to become a part of our history and add to the growing list of successful professionals who were members in the past!
Over the past few years, the healthcare industry has seen a rapid increase in visibility by the public and the business world alike. During this time, the industry's impact on national and international spending has increased even faster and now more than ever warrants the attention of our future leaders.
It is the intention of the Healthcare Business Association (HBA) at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School to be an extraordinary source of education, discussion, and leadership development in the business of healthcare. The HBA aims to enroll students who have a drive and passion for improving the healthcare landscape, be it within the USA or internationally. In order to provide a superior experience while at Carey, the HBA holds numerous networking events, leads student treks to Fortune 50 companies, holds an annual spring healthcare conference, and runs an annual case competition sponsored by healthcare giants like Pfizer and Danaher Corporation. Each year, the organization tires to innovate and launch stronger engagement opportunities for the student community. In 2020, the HBA launched the "Emerging Trends in Healthcare Speaker Series" aimed at medical/dual degree students and a Strategy Sprint for students interested in healthcare consulting.

Emerging Trends in Health Care Speaker Series
Held once a semester to connect a healthcare industry expert to students across Johns Hopkins University. The hour-long event (virtual or in-person) involves a presentation on a trending healthcare topic followed by Q&A/networking.
In collaboration with the Office of Experiential Learning (OEL), the HBA co-hosts an annual healthcare case competition centered around a current challenge faced by an organization in the healthcare industry.
Since 2019, Danaher Diagnostics LLC. has partnered with the HBA and OEL to sponsor one of Carey's largest annual case competitions. Be it in-person or virtual, the HBA has attracted both national and international interest from students in top B-schools. Students gain invaluable experience through solving a real-world challenge and pitching their solutions to a panel of leaders. Winners get mentorship opportunities, internship/full-time job interviews, and sometimes even a chance to work as a consultant on a company's project.
In 2020, the theme of the competition was focused around the COVID-19 pandemic: The Role of Home Testing in Remote Patient Management. With representation from 62 teams across 6 countries, the event was held completely virtual and was marked as the biggest case competition that Carey has ever seen. The HBA will continue to offer an online or hybrid case competition experience to ensure students have every opportunity to participate and make a positive impact in the healthcare space.
HBA members have participated in numerous case competitions and put the Carey Business School's name on the map. Notable competitions include Kellogg Biotech and Healthcare Case Competition, Yale Healthcare Case Competition, Business School Alliance for Health Management (BAHM) Case Competition, Humana-Mays Healthcare Analytics Case Competition, UNC Healthcare Case Competition, UCLA Center for Healthcare Management Case Competition and National Black MBA Case Competition.
