JHU Carey Business School Leave of Absence Policy
There may be times when a Carey student needs to take a break from their academic work during the year. For any specific questions about taking a leave (including Required Leaves of Absence), visit the university Leave of Absence policy.
Applying for a Leave of Absence
The general process for taking a Leave of Absence (LOA) is to contact your academic advisor first. If you’re not sure who your advisor is, visit Finding Your Advisor. Your advisor will provide you with an application form to apply for either a Personal or Medical LOA.
Personal Leave of Absence
Proper documentation addressing one of the permitted reasons a student would qualify for a Personal LOA must accompany the application, as indicated below:
- Military Service: a letter or verification from the Armed Forces
- Personal or Family Hardship: a personal letter
- Financial Difficulty: a personal letter
Medical Leave of Absence
LOAs requested for medical reasons must be supported by a licensed mental health or primary care provider using the University’s required Provider Form.
Special Considerations for International students
Students utilizing a Visa to study within the U.S. will also need to consult Office of International Services (OIS). Review their page on taking a leave of absence.
Contact Financial Aid
The student should contact Financial Aid for information about getting any refund and discussing how the leave may impact future semester aid.
Approval of Leave of Absence
Students will be notified in writing of the approval or disapproval of their leave request. At that time students must provide a timeline for an expected return to study.
Return to Study
Students should reach out to their academic advisor with any necessary documentation to return to study. If a student fails to return from an approved LOA and fails to timely respond to the University’s attempt to contact them, the student will be removed from their program of study. Students should generally follow the below timeline to return to study in a timely manner:
Semester of Return | Earliest Submission | Latest Submission |
---|---|---|
Fall 1 or 2 | March 15 | August 1 |
Intersession | October 15 | December 1 |
Spring 1 or 2 | October 15 | January 1 |
Summer | March 15 | May 1 |
Considerations for international students
The time it takes to obtain an I-20 can vary depending on one’s home country. It is important to allow time for this process. Students should communicate with the Office of International Services to discuss how much time will be necessary to obtain the appropriate paperwork.
Questions
General information about LOAs can be found in the university Leave of Absence policy. Students with specific LOA questions can reach out to their academic advisor. If you’re not sure who your advisor is, visit Finding Your Advisor.
