Washington Metro U-Pass Student Program

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) U-Pass program offers eligible university students unlimited riding privileges on Metrobus and Metrorail at a substantially discounted price. At approximately $1 per day, Metro's U-Pass offers an affordable transportation option for students to travel throughout the region for classes, internships, jobs and other activities.

Eligibility

Students enrolled in a full-time academic program based in Washington, D.C are eligible for a U-Pass. Eligibility is determined by a student’s academic program of enrollment, not the number, modality, or location of courses taken during a given academic term. Students enrolled in part-time, online, and/or Baltimore-based academic programs are not eligible for the U-Pass, regardless of course load or enrollment in courses offered in Washington, D.C.

For eligible academic programs, the U-Pass is a required program cost and is not available on an opt-in or opt-out basis.

Pick-Up Instructions

Eligible students will receive their U-Pass card at MS Orientation. Starting September 7th, students should visit HBC 278 to get their cards.

Quick Facts

  • The goal of the program is to save you money on Metro, avoid the hassles of driving, and help us take cars off the road for a cleaner environment.
  • The pass is good for any type of trip: to school, work, internships, recreational events, and personal trips.
  • The pass does not cover parking fees at Metro stations. U-Pass holders must use a separate SmarTrip card and pay the “Non-Rider” parking fees at Metro Stations.
  • If you are a returning student, your card from the previous year has been deactivated permanently, and you will have to pick up a new card.
