Policies and Procedures for On-Site and Remote-Live Classes

Onsite Courses

Attendance

  • Students in onsite courses are expected to attend classes in person.
  • Students may miss up to one class session of a course without loss of attendance and participation points (if applicable) for the following reasons:
    • If they are displaying symptoms of any illness or are within five days of a positive COVID test.
    • If they inform the instructor of their intent to miss class for any reason at least 48 hours before class.
  • Beyond the one allowed absence, faculty have full discretion over attendance and participation policies, subject to any disability accommodations that have been requested through Student Disability Services (SDS).
  • NOTE: The exception immediately above does not apply to classes containing an in-class exam, quiz, or major deliverable. Students are expected to attend those classes in-person, unless a disability related accommodation has been requested through SDS.
  • Students who anticipate or have difficulty complying with these rules should discuss any concerns with their advisor and may apply for a Leave of Absence.

University closures

  • When the university closes (e.g., for inclement weather), onsite class sessions automatically convert to remote-live class sessions (except in extenuating circumstances), in which case the remote-live policies below apply

  • No behaviors or communications in class sessions, breakout sessions, or other class-related interactions may distract from the learning environment, as judged by the instructor
  • Infractions of these policies may be considered violations of the student conduct code

Class participation

  • Each instructor will set their own rules regarding how to participate and what constitutes participation
  • Failure to comply with the attendance policies above will result in a reduced participation grade (if applicable), as determined by the instructor

Office hours

  • In accordance with standard policy, at least 2 hours of office hours will be provided per week
  • All office hours may be provided online at the instructor’s discretion

Health and safety

  • Students must be in full compliance with all current university and government health and safety protocols for the duration of the course

Remote-Live Courses

Camera use, recording, and attendance

  • All students must keep their cameras on except for breaks and brief interludes, unless they receive a documented exception from the instructor
  • Instructors and students are prohibited from recording any videos or images of classes because camera use is required; infractions of this policy by students may be considered violations of the student conduct code
  • However, individual instructors may choose to record videos or images of their classes by explicitly informing students that they can turn their cameras off, in accordance with the Guidelines for Recording with Zoom
  • Additionally, instructors (only) are allowed to make audio-only recordings of classes or portions thereof, regardless of student camera use, to aid students with accessibility, connectivity, or other issues; access to audio recordings will be made available to students via the Guidelines for Recording with Zoom
  • Students with approved accommodations to audio-record classes may also make audio-only recordings
