Carey alum leads Johns Hopkins Hospital through challenges and unprecedented opportunities

Why it matters:

The health care industry is evolving rapidly, and Dr. Redonda Miller (MBA ’04), president of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, is at the forefront of addressing its most pressing challenges.

As president of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Redonda Miller (MBA ’04) has dedicated her career to advancing patient care, fostering innovation, and ensuring operational excellence. With a deep commitment to health care leadership, she oversees one of the most prestigious medical institutions in the world, striving to uphold its mission of improving health outcomes for both the local community and the global population.

For Miller, no two days are alike—and that’s exactly what she loves about her job. Her role blends strategic planning with hands-on leadership, encompassing everything from one-on-one meetings with direct reports to guiding entire departments and mentoring emerging leaders. Whether she’s making clinical rounds, solving operational challenges, or setting long-term goals for the institution, her work is driven by a singular focus: ensuring the highest quality of care for patients.

Miller’s leadership has not gone unnoticed. Her inductions into the National Academy of Medicine and the Maryland Chamber of Commerce Business Hall of Fame reflect not just her individual accomplishments, but the collective achievements of the entire Johns Hopkins Hospital team.

“When you work with the best people, it reflects back on the whole team,” she says. “I see these honors as a validation of the incredible work our hospital staff has done on behalf of our patients.”

Facing health care’s greatest challenges and opportunities

The health care industry is evolving rapidly, and Miller is at the forefront of addressing its most pressing challenges. Staffing shortages, financial sustainability, and hospital capacity issues are among the key concerns she navigates daily.

Yet, alongside these challenges come unprecedented opportunities. Advances in artificial intelligence promise to revolutionize diagnostics and streamline administrative processes. The expansion of ambulatory care centers allows for better patient access while preserving inpatient capacity for more complex cases. And groundbreaking research continues to accelerate the development of new treatments and cures, bringing hope to patients worldwide.

Words of wisdom for future leaders

Miller’s journey to health care leadership was not a linear one. Originally envisioning a career as a clinician-educator, she changed course and ended up in administration—an unexpected change, but one for which she is grateful.

To current students, she offers two key pieces of advice based on her own career journey: embrace every learning opportunity, and stay open to unexpected paths. She explains that whether it is through coursework, internships, or mentorships, exposure to a wide range of perspectives and experiences lays the foundation for future success. And while having a career plan is valuable, flexibility can lead to remarkable and fulfilling opportunities.

“Advancement takes not only hard work but also courage,” she says.

Reflecting on earning her MBA from Carey, Miller says it was a transformative experience. The program equipped her with essential skills in health care finance, leadership, negotiation, and strategic thinking—all of which play a critical role in her position today.

The ability to influence and manage change is crucial for any health care leader. Carey helped me build those skills, preparing me to navigate an ever-evolving health care landscape.
