We encourage applicants to apply in the round that best aligns with their personal timeline and application readiness. Applying earlier does not guarantee admission, and we encourage applicants to submit their strongest application rather than rushing to meet an earlier deadline.

Applicants are required to submit a total of two required essays. The first essay topic is required for all applicants and must be responded to directly. You will choose your second essay topic from the list provided on the application. It is important to express your original thoughts and incorporate your individual voice in response to these questions.
Be sure your statements capture who you are, what you believe, and what you aspire to do.
Tips for writing your essay:
- Use a 12-point font and double space your document
- Indicate which question you are answering at the beginning of each essay
- Do not mail paper copies of your essay to Admissions
- Upload all required essays
- Essays should be 300–500 words
You will also have the option to include additional information for the Admissions committee if you would like to clarify aspects of your academic record, personal history, or professional attributes.
You are required to provide transcripts showing that you have earned or are in the process of earning a bachelor’s degree, as well as transcripts from all colleges and universities where you have attempted more than 15 credit hours. Final transcripts must indicate any degrees earned.
For the application: You may submit unofficial transcripts for consideration during the admissions process. Note that any transcript sent directly to you, regardless of issuer, is considered unofficial.
Official transcripts: Official transcripts are required before Johns Hopkins University can confer your Carey Business School degree. If you are applying for federal financial aid, official transcripts must be received by the Office of Admissions before federal financial aid can be offered.
Official transcripts from U.S. institutions must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and should be sent electronically. Please visit your school’s website to request that your official transcript be sent to [email protected].

Non-U.S. transcripts: If you attended a non-U.S. institution, please review the Additional Requirements for Non-U.S. Applicants section below for information about the required course-by-course credential evaluation process.
Your admission decision may be delayed if transcripts from all required institutions are not received.
A current resume or CV is required. Please be sure to have it fully updated and include both the months and years of your various work experiences, as strong professional experience is preferred.
We suggest choosing someone who knows you professionally and who can speak directly about your strengths and experience for your letter of recommendation. It is more important to select someone with knowledge of your abilities than someone at the highest level in your company.
Be sure that you have been in their class, have reported to them directly, and/or have shared your interest in graduate school with them.
- Please use your recommender’s work email address rather than a personal account like Gmail. Work emails are preferred as they support our credential verification process.
- Recommendations from relatives and friends are strongly discouraged.
- One recommendation is required. We will read up to two.

Our full-time Master of Science programs are test-optional for all applicants. This means you may choose whether or not to submit a GMAT or GRE score with your application. If you have taken a test and believe your score strengthens your application, you should submit one. If you do not wish to test or believe your test score does not reflect your ability and potential for graduate study, please do not include it. You will indicate your choice directly on the application.
If you decide to submit a score, please note the following:
- You can self-report your score on the application, but you should also have your official score sent directly to Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.
- We accept GMAT and GRE scores that are up to five years old, including scores from both in-person and at-home versions of the exams.
- We do not have a preference for which test you submit, but be sure to do your research to determine which exam is the best fit for you.

All applicants to our full-time Master of Science programs (excluding the Master's in Management) will complete a video interview through the Kira platform. This requirement is built into the application, so be sure to allocate enough time to complete it before the deadline.
Full-time Master's in Management (MiM):
Interviews are granted on an invitation-only basis after the initial evaluation of a submitted application. The interview will be approximately 30 minutes in length and serves to be both evaluative and informational. The interview will begin with a series of questions based on your application, which is an opportunity for us to gain deeper insight into your background, experiences, and interest in the Master's in Management program. There will be a portion of time reserved for you to ask any questions you may have, so please come prepared with thoughtful questions.
We look for applicants who are energetic, engaging, and can articulate their stories, and speak to how the Master's in Management will position them for what’s next. Answer questions honestly, not with the answer you think the interviewer wants to hear. Do not memorize answers for expected interview questions. Be yourself.
A $100 nonrefundable application fee is due when you submit your online application.

Admissions policies
Work experience is not required for admission to the program. However, prior work experience may be required to be eligible for a GRE or GMAT waiver.
You can only apply to one specialty master’s program at a time. Candidates cannot apply to more than one program within the same round. If offered admission, you must accept or decline by the deadline for that round. You cannot wait to make a decision on a first offer while applying to another program in the next round.
Applicants to the full-time MS in Finance and MS in Marketing programs have the option to select Baltimore or Washington, D.C. as their preferred Carey location. We try our best to admit candidates to their preferred location, but cannot guarantee it. Space in Washington, D.C. is limited and often fills after round two.
Admission to other schools in the University
Each school at Johns Hopkins University has an independent Office of Admissions and its own application process. You must apply separately to programs housed within separate schools, although some established dual degree programs only require a single application. Current Carey Business School students who wish to enter a degree program at one of the other schools in the university must submit an admission application to that school. Admission to the Carey Business School establishes no claim or priority for admission to any other school in the university.
