Christopher Schaper, chief risk officer for the global insurer American International Group, will be the keynote speaker for the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School commencement ceremonies on May 19. Schaper oversees AIG’s global enterprise risk management organization and the company’s enterprise risk strategy.
“Chris Schaper has more than 30 years of experience in the insurance, reinsurance, and capital markets industry, and is a highly committed and engaged member of the Carey Business School alumni community,” said Dean Alex Triantis. “We are delighted to have him share his wisdom, insights, and experiences as we celebrate our graduating students.”
Before becoming AIG’s chief risk officer, Schaper served as the company’s global chief underwriting officer, leading the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of AIG’s global underwriting strategy as well as next-generation risk analytics. He also served as CEO of AIG Re, the global reinsurance business of AIG, where he was responsible for the execution of the firm’s global assumed reinsurance strategy with a focus on the development of innovative reinsurance and capital markets solutions. Additionally, he held the roles of CEO of Validus Re and CEO of AlphaCat, AIG’s insurance-linked securities entity.
Before joining AIG in 2019, Schaper was CEO of Victor Insurance Holdings, Marsh McLennan’s global underwriting MGA. Schaper also served as president of Montpelier Re Ltd. and underwriting chairman of Blue Capital, Montpelier’s capital markets entity.
Schaper currently serves on the Board and Executive Committee of the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA), the core trade association of the U.S. insurance industry, and the Board of Trustees of The Institutes, a leading non-profit insurance educational organization. He is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at Carey Business School.
He is a graduate of Central Connecticut State University and earned an MS in International Business and an MBA from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.
Carey Business School is hosting two graduation ceremonies on May 19 at the Joseph A. Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. Master of Science in Finance candidate Danlin Yang will speak on behalf of Class of 2026 at the morning ceremony for specialized master’s degree graduates. MBA candidate Ira Sharma will address graduates during the MBA ceremony in the afternoon.
