John Francis is the project manager for the World Health Organization’s Malaria Vaccines team, supporting the introduction of the recently recommended malaria vaccine in selected areas of Ghana, Kenya and Malawi. John previously worked with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, where he served for nearly 12 years in a variety of project management, policy, and leadership roles. His efforts at CDC included supporting the Global Health Security Agenda; the COVID-19 International Taskforce in 2020; the E-cigarette Lung Injury response in 2019; the Ebola Vaccine Trial in 2015; as well as Communities Putting Prevention to Work, Community Transformation Grants, and national and state tobacco control efforts. Prior to the CDC, John worked for the California State Department of Public Health’s State Tobacco Control Program as a Policy and Program Analyst supporting strategic planning and policy efforts both at the state and local level. John earned his MPH and MBA from Johns Hopkins in 2005, and began his public health career as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer from 2001-2003, serving as the Tobacco and Alcohol Officer with the Republic of Kiribati’s Ministry of Health.
