Chaomei Chen, a Johns Hopkins University trustee and leader in the financial risk management industry, is the featured speaker at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School’s summer graduation ceremony.
Johns Hopkins University Trustee Chaomei Chen to give keynote address at Carey Business School graduation
Chaomei Chen, a Johns Hopkins University trustee and leader in the financial risk management industry, will be the featured speaker at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School’s graduation ceremony, Thursday, August 3.
Before retiring, Chen was an advisor and board member for multiple fintech companies and was previously the chief risk officer of LendingClub, where she was responsible for the establishment and enhancement of the company’s enterprise risk management organization. Before joining LendingClub, she oversaw all risk management functions for the WaMu credit card portfolio at JPMorgan Chase. Before joining JPMorgan Chase, Chen was vice chair and chief credit officer at Providian Financial Services, where she was instrumental in the firm’s turnaround before its acquisition by WaMu.
Chen’s experience also includes executive positions with Fleet Credit Card Services and PNC National Bank, and management positions with Citicorp, American Express, and Household Credit Services. During her career, Chen oversaw multi-billion-dollar business and credit risk portfolios and directed the large-scale implementation of credit risk management, business risk management, collections, fraud prevention, BASEL implementation, and database marketing for operations both domestically and internationally.
Chen earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Southwestern Jiaotong University in China and an MSE degree in mathematical science from Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. She is an active member of the Whiting School Advisory Board. The Yu Wu and Chaomei Chen Department Head of Applied Mathematics and Statistics endowed professorship at the Whiting School of Engineering is named in her honor.

In addition to Chen’s keynote address, MS in Marketing candidate Julia Pak will speak on behalf of the Class of 2023. Pak was nominated for the honor by her fellow students and other members of the Carey Business School community.
The graduation ceremony will be at the Joseph A. Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on August 3. Carey Business School also held a ceremony for spring graduates in May.
