Inside Look Into Flexible MBA
The Johns Hopkins Carey Business School’s part-time Flexible MBA program is developing a new generation of business leaders willing to tackle society’s most vexing problems. As a student, you’ll have the opportunity to focus on key domains like leadership and management, health care, and financial businesses.
Designed to fit into the demanding schedules of working professionals, the Flexible MBA can be completed in-person, online, or in a blended format encompassing courses from both mediums.
Flexible MBA concentrations in Financial Businesses, Health Care Management, and Leading Organizations are offered in-person and online. Students may elect to complete these concentrations by taking a mix of online and in-person courses, depending on their schedules. Not all electives or concentration courses are available in the online format, although we are constantly adding and developing online courses each semester.
All students will complete a total of 54 credits, with the freedom to take up to six years to finish the degree. The average time for completion is 3½ years, although many students complete the degree in under three years.
In-person courses are offered in eight-week terms throughout the academic year at Carey’s Baltimore and Washington, D.C., locations. Classes are typically held in the evenings, Monday-Thursday, from 6 to 9 p.m., although we offer some Saturday morning classes from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. Each course meets once per week.
Students taking on-site courses can choose from seven concentrations: Entrepreneurship, Financial Businesses, Health Care Management, Interdisciplinary Business, Leading Organizations, Marketing, and Real Estate and Infrastructure.
Courses are offered in eight-week terms and are available for students in the Financial Businesses, Health Care Management, Marketing* and Leading Organizations concentrations. Courses feature mostly asynchronous learning activities that may be done at any time, with a few recommended or required synchronous learning activities that occur in real time. Online courses are as rigorous as our in-person courses, and online students have access to the same university resources as their in-person counterparts, in addition to specialized services designed for online learning. These include library services, academic advising, student services, and information technology services.
Online sections of Business Communication, Leadership in Organizations, and Negotiation also require attendance at an in-person residency on the Baltimore campus. During each residency, students will engage in course instruction, participate in activities, and network with faculty, fellow students, alumni, and business leaders. Residencies for Business Communications and Leadership in Organizations are three days each. The Negotiation residency is 1½ days.
*The Marketing concentration will be available to online students beginning in Fall 2019.
The Flexible MBA is a rigorous degree program designed to give working professionals the business tools and knowledge they need to elevate their careers – all in a format that accommodates their schedules.
On-site courses are offered in both Baltimore and Washington, D.C., in the evenings and on Saturdays, and meet once per week for an eight-week term.
Online courses are available for students in the Financial Businesses, Health Care Management, Management ** and Leading Organizations concentrations. Online courses follow the same eight-week terms as on-site courses and are taught by the same full-time faculty who develop and teach the school’s on-site courses. Courses feature mostly asynchronous learning activities that may be done at any time, with a few recommended or required synchronous learning activities that occur in real time. Students should review the technical requirements for online students before applying to this format.
