International applicant resources

In addition to submitting the materials required for all applicants, applicants whose first/primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken English. To demonstrate proficiency, international applicants must submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Pearson Test of English (PTE), or Duolingo English Test (DET). We do not accept TOEFL Essentials.

You may be exempt from this requirement, if you meet one of the following criteria:

• You completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in the United States. 
• You completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university where English was the ONLY language of instruction, as indicated on the university’s website, transcript, and/or mark sheets.
• You have been employed and resided in the United States for at least four years immediately prior to applying.

Please indicate in the “Supporting Materials” section of the application if you meet one of the above qualifications for exemption.

The preferred minimum scores for each test are as follows:

• TOEFL:100 (“MyBest” score is acceptable) 
• IELTS: 7.0
• PTE: 70
• DET: 130

The TOEFL code for Carey Business School is 0834. IELTS, PTE, and DET do not require a code.

Applicants may be required to provide additional evidence of English proficiency if requested by the Admissions Committee for their individual program.

Submit an official course-by-course evaluation for all degrees earned or expected from outside the United States. The course-by-course evaluation must be provided by a NACES member agency and must reflect that the applicant has the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree. If you completed coursework outside the U.S. but earned your degree within the U.S., you must provide transcripts from all attended schools and transcripts must be in English.

Applicants who are currently pursuing a degree from a school outside of the U.S. and will not graduate by the application deadline are required to submit a course-by-course evaluation of completed course work. Students who choose to enroll are required to submit an updated evaluation showing the degree has been conferred.

Because the required fees and documents for evaluations may vary by agency, applicants are encouraged to contact the agency directly for additional information. We authorize evaluations from any NACES member agency. Our applicants most commonly choose one of the following:

• Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.
• International Education Research Foundation
• SpanTran: Johns Hopkins Carey Business School
• World Education Services, Inc.

In some situations, three-year degrees can be considered equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree. In these cases, applicants can apply to Carey Business School. Before you begin your application and the credential evaluation process, please contact the Admissions Officer for your program for further guidance. Typically, World Education Services is the only credential evaluation agency that will provide an evaluation showing a three-year degrees as being equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree.

Carey Business School will consider a three-year degree from India as equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree regardless of the evaluating agency, under the following criteria:

• The degree has been earned in Division I

  AND

• The awarding institution has been accredited by India’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of “A” or better.

• In order to receive an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 status from Johns Hopkins University, you must be fully admitted to a full-time degree program well in advance of the start of the semester. We encourage you to apply in Round 1 or Round 2 to allow plenty of time for visa processing. Read more about our application deadlines.
• Carey Business School does not issue an I-20 for admission to any part-time program, online program, or certificate. I-20s are only available for full-time, in-person master’s degree programs.
• No federal financial aid is available for international students. International students are considered for merit scholarships that are available in their program of admission based on their application. No separate application is needed. Merit-based scholarships are limited, competitive, and availability can vary by program. Students receiving scholarship funding are notified at the time of admission. Please refer to the Office of Financial Aid for information about our endowed scholarships, scholarships available from private organizations, and student loans available to international students.
• International student tuition rates are identical to domestic student rates. Costs for all academic programs can be found on the tuition and fees webpage.
  • As an F-1 student and to receive an I-20 from us, you are required to provide documented proof that you have funding equal to all tuition and living expenses for one academic year. You will also find the current estimated cost of living by program on our tuition and fees webpage.
• For privacy and security reasons, do not send bank statements or other financial documentation with your application. You will be notified by the Office of International Services when this information is required.
• We do not provide on-campus housing for any Carey Business School student. Learn more about housing resources in the area.

The Office of International Services (OIS) issues documents required for students to obtain their visa and maintain their status once they have arrived in the U.S. OIS also aids with travel, employment authorizations, change of status, cross-cultural awareness, financial concerns, health matters, housing, and other issues that may arise during a student’s time at Hopkins and while working on OPT.

All documents required to receive an I-20 should be sent directly to OIS. New degree-seeking students should consult the OIS website for more information on the visa process and transitioning to life at Johns Hopkins.
