Andrew Burton-Jones is Research Professor of Information Systems at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. After his undergraduate and masters degrees at University of Queensland, he worked for several years for one of the Big-4 consulting firms in IT risk management before completing his PhD at Georgia State University. After serving on the faculty of Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia, where he obtained tenure and promotion, he returned to his alma mater in 2012. In 2026 he then returned to the US to Johns Hopkins University.
Andrew began his career focusing on improving information systems development, especially data modeling. His research then expanded into improving how systems are used. He has studied these topics using multiple methods (quantitative and qualitative) and at multiple levels of analysis (individual, organization, region). For the past 15 years, much of his work has focused on the digital transformation of healthcare, where his insights have helped inform health service strategy and policy. He has received over $10M in research funding and publishes his research in leading journals in Information Systems and Health Informatics.
Andrew has taught information systems courses across the undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive levels, in the USA, Canada, Australia, and China. He also co-led the development of University of Queensland's university-wide Graduate Certificate in Clinical Informatics and Digital Health and served on the Education & Workforce Committee for the Australian Council of Senior Academic Leaders in Digital Health (ACSALDH).
He has served his universities and his scholarly field in many ways, including as Editor-in-Chief of MIS Quarterly (2021-2023) and President of the Association for Information Systems (2024-2025). He is also involved in international efforts to improve research impact, including serving on the AACSB Research Impact Taskforce and the Responsible Research in Business and Management (RRBM) Working Board. He is a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems and Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
