Sample Curriculum

The curriculum of the MBA/MD program reflects the requirements and content of two degree programs: the Medical School Genes to Society curriculum and the Carey Business School MBA curriculum. Both are innovative new approaches to education in their respective fields.

Schedule

In the dual-degree program, you’ll complete the first two semesters of the MBA program at the Carey Business School before starting medical school. In the summer semester, you will complete the second phase of the Discovery to Market project and will take two MBA electives. In academic years 2 and 3 of the 5-year program, you’ll complete years 1 and 2 of medical school. The summer between the first and second years of medical school (AY2 and AY3) and after the second year (AY3) will be devoted to medical school related classes or activities. During academic years 4 and 5, you’ll complete the academic requirements of the MD program and take MBA elective courses required to complete the MBA degree at Carey.

​Degree Requirements and Completion
Students in the dual-degree program must complete all of the degree requirements at both schools before they receive their MD and MBA diplomas.

For the Carey MBA program, students are required to complete 54 credits. Up to 12 credits from the MD electives can be applied to the requirements for the MBA electives, subject to review and approval of the MBA/MD Academic Program Committee.

How to Apply

To apply for the MBA/MD program, please follow the four steps below.

  1. Make sure you meet the admissions requirements and technical standards.
  2. Complete the American Medical College Application (AMCAS).  AMCAS Applications for fall, 2014 must be received by AMCAS no later than October 15.  If you have questions  about AMCAS, please contact the AAMC Section for Student Services at:

    Please Note:  We do not offer an Early Decision Program.
  3. Complete the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Secondary Application. You will be sent a link to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's secondary application once we have received your verified application from AMCAS.  The on-line secondary application will be available July 2, 2013.
    • The AMCAS ID number must be included on the secondary application. 
    • Applications for admission will not be processed until you have submitted your on-line secondary application.
    • The Regular MD secondary application deadline is December 1.  The MD-PhD secondary application deadline is November 1.  Any omissions will delay the processing of your application.
    • Secondary application fee waivers are granted to applicants who have been approved for the AMCAS fee waiver.  Please refer to the instructions in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine on-line secondary application. Fee waivers are not allowed without the required AMCAS approval form.
  4. Request and Submit Letters of Recommendation. One of the following kinds of letters is required. The Committee on Admissions will make the final determination as to whether an applicant's recommendations have come from the appropriate source. Letters of recommendation for the Regular MD Program and the MD-PhD Program should be sent to the AMCAS Letter Service
    • Committee Letter:  Authored by a pre-health committee or advisor and intended to represent your institution's evaluation of you.  A committee letter may or may not include additional letters written in support of your application.  (Required if your college/university has an officially designated committee or advisor.) 
      OR
    • Letter Packet:  A packet or set of letters assembled and distributed by your institution, often by the institution's career center.
      OR
    • Two (2) letters from faculty members in science departments who have taught you and one (1) letter from a non-science faculty member who has taught you.  (Required if the college/university you have attended does not have a Committee or Advisor.)

If you have a graduate degree or significant full-time work experience of a year or more, you are required to submit letters from your previous supervisors.
