Orientation at Carey

Full-time MS students Required Orientation elements

• MS Academic Orientation – All MS Students attend their virtual Academic Orientation which includes meeting your Academic Program staff, understanding your program plan, meeting advisors, and hearing directly from your faculty program director. Attendance is required and prompts access to register for courses.

• MS Cohort Orientation – In August, all MS FT Students attend their Cohort orientation on campus. You will attend engaging sessions that help you meet your classmates, build your community, and understand community expectations.  Before or after your cohort orientation, a virtual faculty panel will be offered. A virtual MS Alumni panel consisting of recent alumni is offered on Friday, August 26. These sessions are required.

• Asynchronous Orientation -  A series of videos and resources introducing campus departments as well as “assignments” that must be completed. It is expected that you watch all the “Required Foundation” videos prior to attending your in-person Cohort Orientations. This part of your orientation is via Canvas, our Learning Management System that your courses will utilize. Asynchronous Orientation will be available starting August 10, 2022, can be viewed and completed on your own time and is available throughout the duration of your academic program.

Full-time MS students who did not earn a degree in the United States are required to attend International Orientation. Please also see the International full-time MS tab for important information.

Full-Time International MS Students

In addition to your MS Programs orientation, all international students beginning their MS program in fall 2022 are required to attend this 2-part Carey Business School International Orientation unless you earned a degree in the U.S. Part One will be held virtually in June and part 2 on-campus in August. Attendance is required and provides opportunities to network and prepare for the Carey classroom. If you earned a degree from a U.S. institution located abroad, you are required to attend. International students with U.S. degrees are welcome to attend and should contact carey.orientation@jhu.edu to register.

• 2022 Virtual Program will be held June 22 (Baltimore students), 23, & 24 (Washington, D.C. students) this 3-hour session to help prepare you for the academic rigors of Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Virtual sessions are held from 8:30-11:30 a.m. ET.
• 2022 on-campus sessions will be held by campus on the following:

Washington, D.C. students will have their virtual and on-campus dates assigned in the late spring. Please plan accordingly.

International Applicants, please note we highly recommend that you arrive to the Baltimore/D.C. area by Monday, August 8, 2022 to prepare for your studies, adjust to the time zone, and get your living arrangements situated.

Quantitative Skills Bootcamp (Registration Required)

August 16: 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

August 17: 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Carey Business School, Harbor East campus

This bootcamp will be held on August 16 - 17 (afternoon and morning, respectively).  This is an optional in-person pre-term refresher workshop offered by Professor Valerie Suslow, Vice Dean for Faculty & Research.  The bootcamp will broadly cover the following content:  Linear Equations, Solving Linear Systems, Calculating Areas, Non-Linear Functions, and Basic Calculus.  These topics will be used in your Microeconomics and Market Design course in the Fall 2 term.  If you are rusty in working with the basic equation of a line (slope and intercept) or drawing lines on a graph and solving for the intersection, this bootcamp could be helpful for you.  If you are comfortable with this material, however, or prefer to refresh on your own, then there is no need to attend.  This bootcamp only covers the basic quantitative skills needed to support your success in the Microeconomics class. It will not cover material related to your other quantitative courses.  Also, Prof. Suslow asked that we let you know that if you feel confident about the topics other than calculus, there is no need to attend the bootcamp just for the calculus material.  She will be covering only a couple basic calculus rules.  We will make the slides available to all FTMBA students after the Bootcamp, and those who want to refresh on the necessary calculus rules can consult the slides.

Business Writing Bootcamp (Registration Required)

August 17: 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Carey Business School, Harbor East campus

This bootcamp will be held on August 17 (afternoon). This is an optional in-person pre-term refresher workshop offered by Associate Professor of Practice Steven D. Cohen. This bootcamp will broadly cover the fundamentals of business writing. These topics will be used in your Business Communications course in the Fall 1 term.

Foundations Week

August 19-26, 2022

Foundations Week truly lays the foundations of your experience throughout the full-time MBA program by engaging you in the concepts, values, and frameworks that will shape your time at Carey and help you “build for what’s next.”

New Student Orientation Technical Tour     Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at 7–8pm (EST)

This session helps new PT and Flex students navigate the Canvas Organization, "Carey New Student Orientation" (NSO). The required content in the NSO must be completed before you can register for classes. If you have questions or simply want to walk through the requirements, we encourage you to attend this session. Part-time Virtual Welcome     Wednesday, August 17 2022 at 7–8pm (EST)

A virtual welcome event at which all students admitted to Part-Time programs for the Spring 2022 semester are invited to hear a welcome message from Dean Triantis and then attend multiple rounds of break-out rooms to network with fellow students, a small number of faculty, and Carey staff. Staff representatives will include members of Programs & Advising and Student Affairs.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Working in teams and leading teams is a critical part of many areas of our lives, school, work, and communities. During this interactive session, we will explore the benefits and challenges of working on a team and identify common roles and characteristics of successful teams. Participate in activities with your peers, reflect on the roles you’ve played on previous teams and identify your style and skills for working in future teams.

Academic Ethics & Commitment to Respect     Thursday, August 25 2022 at 12–1pm (EST)

In our endeavor to create and share knowledge, Carey holds all students to the highest standards of ethical behavior. In order to uphold these high standards, it is your responsibility to understand the Academic Ethics Policy.

This session supplements the required content in your asynchronous orientation. Please be sure to have viewed prior to attending to be able to engage in case discussions in this session.

In, With, and For Our Carey Community: Understanding Self at Carey   Friday, August 26 2022 at 12–1pm (EST)

This session of orientation is an opportunity to introduce or (re)introduce the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging principles. Additionally, this session is intended to help facilitate students’ responsibility as a member of Carey community through fostering an equitable and inclusive space for learning. In this session of orientation, students will identify social identities and how social identities influence implicit biases. Students will then learn how to use social perspective taking as a strategy to help name and confront their biases and to lead with empathy and compassion. This session is designed to allow for continuous learning, active engagement, and deep reflection.

MBA/MA in Design Leadership students

Orientation for MBA/MA in Design Leadership students is held during the summer session. Members of the Carey Programs & Advising team will be present. Students in this program are also welcome to attend the Carey part-time orientation activities (listed below) as the MBA portion of the curriculum is aligned with our Flexible MBA program.

MBA/MA in Design Leadership students

Orientation for MBA/MA in Design Leadership students will be held on Monday, August 1, on the MICA campus. Faculty and staff from both Carey and MICA will be present. Please check your email for more details. Intercultural Communication (Registration required)     Friday, August 26 2022 at 12–1pm (EST)

Have you ever been in a meeting at work, or had a conversation with a client, co-worker, or friend that left you feeling misunderstood and confused? Communication is the bedrock to solid work foundations and creating personal and professional relationships. In our global world, intercultural communication is increasingly important. This session will give you the opportunity to apply practical tools that have helped many people navigate intercultural communication successfully. Come prepared to learn, ask questions and interact with your peers in this engaging workshop.
