Real Estate Board Hosts Carey Students at Private New York Stock Exchange Event
A group of 76 Carey Business School students attended a school-sponsored symposium at the New York Stock Exchange, with the visit culminating in a tour of the stock exchange floor during the closing bell.
The March 3 visit was hosted by Carey’s Real Estate Advisory Board spearheaded by Carey alumnus and Board Chair Jeffrey Olson, the chairman and CEO of Urban Edge Properties. The daylong symposium included panelists, speakers, and group round table discussions featuring executives from different parts of the real estate and financial industries; the symposium focused specifically on real estate investment trusts (REITs).
Most of the students in attendance are enrolled in Carey’s MS in Real Estate and Infrastructure (MS REI) program. The trip also included students from the Global MBA and MS in Finance programs.
Several students lauded the event as a unique opportunity to meet, network with, and learn from industry leaders at a historic and significant venue.
“I was very impressed with the whole event,” said Steve Marker, a student in the MS REI program. “It provided an experience I would not have had outside of Johns Hopkins University.”
Fisayo Alade, a part-time MS REI student, agreed, saying: “The opportunity to listen to industry giants at an iconic location made the event powerful and engaging.”
Matt Garono, a fellow part-time MS REI student, said the event was “world-class” and noted that it had “some of the biggest names in real estate.”
“It was a unique learning experience and a privilege to be there,” Garono said.
The panelists and speakers included a variety of industry leaders. The keynote was delivered by Steve Roth, founder and chairman of Vornado Realty Trust. After Roth’s remarks, there were two panels moderated by Olson that each featured two panelists: a panel discussing REIT analysis and a panel on capital markets.
The REIT Analysis Panel Discussion featured Mary Hogan, managing director and co-head of Americas Real Estate for APG Asset Management US; and Steve Sakwa, senior managing director and senior equity research analyst at Evercore ISI.
The Capital Markets Panel Discussion featured Michael Graziano, co-head of Global Real Estate Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs; and Guy Metcalfe, managing director and global chairman of Real Estate Investment Banking at Morgan Stanley.
Later, the panelists and fellow industry luminaries on Carey’s Real Estate Advisory Board hosted free-flowing roundtable discussions with groups of five to eight students. The day ended in a trip to the floor of the stock exchange to view the ringing of the closing bell.
