What type of executive education courses does the Carey Business School offer?

Carey Business School offers three types of executive education courses:

  • Individual non-credit professional development courses in leadership, management, business communication, health care, marketing, and innovation and human-centered design.
  • Executive certificates in Business Communication, Health Care Leadership and Management, Management Development, and Innovation and Design Thinking.
  • Custom programs tailored to specific organizations on topics most relevant to their leadership and professional development needs.

What is the difference between a short course and a certificate?

Our short courses are stand-alone non-credit professional development courses, best suited for professionals who are looking to acquire new skills or who need to update their domain expertise. A certificate of completion is provided after each short course. These courses are great resume-builders and provide support for a specific desired skill.

In comparison, earning a certificate demonstrates mastery of a variety of skills within a certain core subject. Earning certification enhances your resume and provides you with an expanded knowledge base, leverage for salary negotiations, promotions, and overall career growth.

What types of certificate options does the Carey Business School have?

We currently offer three types of certificates – integrated executive certificates, bundled executive certificates, and development certificates.

An integrated certificate is comprised of one single, multi-day course that provides an in-depth, hands-on experience for participants. These programs are all encompassing, and participants earn an executive certificate at the end of the final day. The current integrated certificate offerings include Health Care Leadership and Management.

Bundled certificates are comprised of multiple short courses. After completing the required short courses within a two-year timeframe, participants earn an executive certificate in the available subject. The current bundled certificate offerings include:

• Business Communication
• Innovation and Design Thinking

A development certificate allows the flexibility to design your own custom certificate by combining the Foundations of Leadership & Management course with any three courses of your choice. The current development certificate offering is the Management Development Certificate.

Who teaches Carey Business School's Executive Education courses?

Our courses are taught by renowned, award-winning researchers and business practitioners. Visit our Faculty page to learn more about our instructors.

How long are the courses? When do they begin and end?

The total duration of each course varies depending on the topic. Our standard formats are 1, 2, or 3 days, during the business week and, in some cases, during weekends. Typically, courses last a full business day, starting around 9:00 AM and ending around 4:00 PM. For daily agendas, please visit the web pages of the courses you are interested in attending.

Are there any participant expectations?

A certificate is awarded at the end of each course or certificate program, which indicates that you have participated and engaged in the course in its entirety. We understand that unforeseen commitments may arise, but we require that you not miss more than two hours of a 3-day session, one hour of a 2-day session, and require that you are present for the full length of a 1-day session.

Do I earn continuing education units (CEUs)? Can I count these courses toward a degree at Johns Hopkins or any other university?

All Executive Education short courses are professional development courses. Please email us with specific questions about the availability of CEUs.

The Executive Certificate in Health Care Leadership and Management does offer CMEs and is a credentialed program. Please see the Health Care Leadership and Management page for more information.
