First Steps for New Students

As a new Carey Business School student, you are encouraged to review the following information, as it will assist you in navigating administrative steps that will enhance your student experience.

New Student Checklist



1. Activate your Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory (JHED) log-in.

JHED is a university-wide online directory of students, staff, and faculty. New students need to locate and activate their Login ID. The JHED ID and password give admitted students access to a variety of JHU online resources, including online registration and online library services. For step-by-step instructions to activate your JHED Login visit our tutorial (instructions are the same across all schools). Please note that a JHED ID (usually based on an individual's name) is different from a Hopkins ID (a combination of letters and/or numbers). Only students who have accepted admission and paid their deposit will be able to complete this step.

2. Set up your Johns Hopkins Microsoft Exchange Online (Office 365 E-mail).

All Carey Business School students are required to activate their Hopkins email address. All official communications from the school and Johns Hopkins University will be sent to this address, including, but not limited to, class assignments, billing information, and emergency notifications. For step-by-step instructions to activate your Exchange Online email and to learn to forward your JHU email to another address, visit the tutorial. Only students who have accepted admission and paid their deposit will be able to complete this step.

3. Register for classes.

Part-time students may register for classes after speaking with their academic advisor. New full-time students will receive information about registration by early July and will register at that time.
To search for classes you may visit this website; to register for classes, please visit this website (you will need your user ID and password). Make sure to review the academic calendar, which indicates registration dates, deadlines, semester end and start dates, add/drop periods, and other important dates.
Please note that students will be notified by their program advisors and program managers when and how to register. A separate email will be sent to all students with specific information.
Please make sure that you carefully review your program requirements and speak with your academic advisor before registering for classes. Your advisor's name can be viewed in SIS. If you are a new student, your advisor will be assigned within a week after you have accepted admission.
Attention Washington, D.C. students - Immunization Requirement:

According to Washington, D.C. Immunization Law 3-20, students under the age of 26 who attend classes in Washington, D.C. must get vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and tetanus/diphtheria. You will need to submit proof of your immunizations once you register for classes at the Washington, D.C. Center. Such forms are provided to all students admitted to the Carey Business School. An immunization hold will be placed on student accounts, preventing registration if the completed immunization form is not submitted by the registration period of your second semester at the school. Attention Baltimore, MD, students - Immunizations
Students attending classes in Baltimore, MD, are strongly advised to get the following vaccines:

  • Varicella
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Td/Tdap) vaccination
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccination
  • Meningococcal vaccination
  • Hepatitis  A vaccination 
  • Hepatitis B vaccination 
  • The above vaccines are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

4. Obtain your Student Identification Card (J-card).

Before arriving on campus, please log in to the Johns Hopkins student portal ( with your Jhed ID and password. You will be prompted to upload a photo. Follow the photo requirement instructions located on the screen and upload your photo by the dates listed for Carey Business School students. Please do not email photos to Operations. JCards will be available for students to pick-up at the Harbor East location or the Washington, D.C. Center. Campus Operations and Facilities will send an email to all students with pick-up instructions. Effective July 1, 2016, all students will have to present government-issued identification when picking up their J-card. All students are required to have their JCard on them at all times and must present them to security in order to gain access to the building each time they enter. If a student loses, misplaces or damages his/her JCard, the student must request a replacement (a replacement fee of $20 will be assessed). Payment is accepted by credit card or checks only. 5. International Students check in with the Office of International Services.

If you are an international student who has come to the U.S. in F-1 status with an I-20 from Carey, you must check in with the Office of International Services (OIS). Please contact them at or by phone at 667-208-7001 for more information. More information for F-1 students can be found at

6. Financial Aid at the Carey Business School

The financial aid staff at the Carey Business School is dedicated to assisting you in finding a way to pursue your educational goals. Financial aid programs help eligible students to pay for their direct educational costs, such as tuition and fees; and indirect educational costs, such as living expenses, books, and other miscellaneous expenses.

7. Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence Training.

The Johns Hopkins University and Carey Business School have a longstanding commitment to addressing the issues of sexual violence and sexual harassment.  It is our mission to provide a safe and supportive campus environment.  Over the past few months, the university has worked to update policies on sexual violence and sexual harassment and has developed new initiatives for sexual violence prevention and response.  One of these initiatives is a mandatory sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention training session for all students, faculty, and staff. All new students will receive an email from the Office of Institutional Equity to complete the training. General information is available on the Office of Institutional Equity Page.

9. Summer Intensive program

  • July 25 - August 12, 2019, Baltimore, MD
  • July 29 - August 14, 2019, Washington, D.C.
The Summer Intensive Program runs concurrently on the Baltimore and Washington, DC campuses.  Students attend Summer Intensive on the campus where they will complete their academic coursework and are automatically registered for Summer Intensive.  All international students beginning their programs in Fall 2018 are required to attend unless the student has a degree from a US college or university that was earned in the United States. 10. New student orientation

All new Carey students are expected to attend orientation. During orientation, students receive important information and have the opportunity to ask questions of faculty/staff and get to know other students in their programs.
