Senior Associate Director Of Advising
Now a Senior Associate Director of Advising, Jeff has been advising students at Carey since 2014. He works with full-time and part-time students and with every degree program the school offers. Prior to his time at Carey, Jeff worked for a variety of secondary and post-secondary institutions in many different student support roles, including career counseling, residential life, and (or course) advising. He earned his Bachelors degree in music education from Northwestern University and his Masters in counseling from Teachers College in New York. Jeff loves being a part of higher ed communities and believes in the power of education to improve lives and societies. In his spare time, Jeff loves to sing, watch soccer, and drink local craft beer.
Director of Advising
Merv has worked at JHU for the past 24 years in many capacities that include program coordination and administration, recruiting, admissions and advising. He has been an advisor for the past 15 years and at one time advised students in every program offered by Carey Business School (formally School of Professional Studies). Currently, he is the Director of the Advising office and in this capacity splits his time between administrative and advising duties. He currently advises fulltime MBA, dual degree and a very small population of flexible MBA students. Mervyn holds a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins School of Professional Studies. When not at work Mervyn is either spending time with his family or looking at older City houses for potential rehab projects with his friends.
John has been involved in academic advising, mentoring, and coaching for over 15 years with graduate and undergraduate students in higher education. He holds two master’s degrees: one is from the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration with concentrations in policy analysis and community organizing, while the other is from American University in Washington, DC with concentrations in dance education, performance, and history. John enjoys performing. He sings with the New Wave Singers of Baltimore, is president of the board, and takes dance classes when time allows.
Yassi Hakami discovered her passion for higher education advising during her post graduate experience at American University. While earning her LL.M. degree in Law and Government, she worked with graduate and post-graduate scholars as their Academic Advisor at the Cultural Division of the Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Washington, DC. Since 2007, she has built a career in higher education and has been an Academic Advisor for Domestic and International MS and GC students in Carey Business School since 2012. She has earned her LL.B from Shahid Beheshti University of Tehran and an LL.M. in Immigration Law and Administrative Policy from American University Washington College of Law. Her passion is to see her students succeed and she takes pride in enabling her students to take ownership of their academic journey.
Prior to joining Carey, Michael worked as an International Academic Advisor for Walden University’s on-line PhD in Management and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programs for over 5 years, and he most recently worked for over two years as an Academic Advisor with Towson University’s College of Business and Economics, advising undergraduate students in the Business Administration and Accounting majors. Before working as a professional advisor, Michael completed his B.A. and M.A. in English with a concentration in Literature at Salisbury University. In addition to his years of professional advising experience, Michael has also taught undergraduate English composition and literature classes as well as an undergraduate Business Communications course.
As a student of literature, Michael is an avid reader and is always looking to learn about a new author or period/genre of fiction. He also enjoys traveling and has been all over the United States as well as a wide range of countries, including: England, Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, Thailand, Japan, and Australia.
Prior to joining the Carey Business School, Jud worked for Bowie State University and has a Community College background from working at Chesapeake College. He was an academic & career advisor, TRIO program coordinator, adjunct English faculty, and transfer advisor to 4-year schools. Jud holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Massachusetts, and a Master of Science in Psychology with concentrations in Educational and Sport psychology from Capella University. Outside of the advising office, Jud enjoys spending time with family and friends, catching up on anime, gaming, and relaxing outside on the weekends.
Jackie brings over fifteen years of experience in international student advising, international admission, and study abroad advising to her current position, all of which have academic advising components. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Master of Science in Counseling/College Student Personnel from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania as well as a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Business Management from Elizabethtown College (also in Pennsylvania). She’s very happy to be part of the Advising Team at Carey.
Corey Meyer has been a part of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School since 2015, and joined the Academic Advising team in October 2018. She received her Bachelors of Social Work from Salisbury University and Masters in Education from Loyola University Maryland. Prior to joining the Advising team, Corey was promoted into Registration Administration within Carey’s Registrar’s Office. In her spare time, she enjoys playing soccer in a women’s competitive league and is always searching for a good book.
LaToya has worked in higher education for the past decade. Originally from New Jersey, she attended Rutgers University for both her undergraduate and graduate studies where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Education in Counseling Psychology. In addition she worked at the University for 9 years in various roles including program coordination, academic advising, and student services. LaToya relocated to Northern Virginia in 2016, at which point she began her work at non-profit organizations. Most recently, she worked for the Common Application, located in Arlington, VA where she served as a Member Relations Manager – working with various member universities and colleges on the development of their admissions applications. LaToya is very passionate about helping others find their path.
