Carrying the torch after Carey’s first international employer trek, the leadership team from the Pan-Asian Career Association initiated the second annual China Trek this past winter break. The trek was successfully conducted with the guidance and support of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and leadership team from Carey Business School’s Career Development Office (CDO).
I am writing this post with the mindset of appreciation toward Christy Murray, CDO’s Executive Director, and Sara Jaques, Associate Director of Employer Relations. Without their guidance and support, we wouldn’t have made the trek happen. Also, I would like to thank our fantastic leadership team of JHU PACA. They showed their leadership and career potential in organizing the trip.
The mission of the career trek was to promote international communication between the two largest economies in the world, China and the United States, in career development and business interaction, enabling current JHU Carey students, professional communities, and other shareholders to leverage leadership and global business potential worldwide.
With the mission above, 18 selected students out of a candidate pool of 60 joined on the trip after a rigorous resume screening and interview process. The background of the finalized group was quite diversified: members were from both Baltimore and DC campuses and represented programs including Global MBA, MBA, MS in Finance, MS in Marketing, and MS in Enterprise Risk Management.
The whole trek involved a culture event, city tour, 2 admitted student events, 2 alumni reunions, and 9 company visits. During the culture event, the group spent time in Shichahai, a famous historic scenic area in Beijing. The whole group enjoyed local food and culture. During the 2 admitted student events, current students from the group shared their experience with prospective 2019 Carey students in both Beijing and Shanghai. At the 2 alumni reunions, the president of the Beijing alumni club, Hao Yu, the president of the Shanghai alumni club, Ji (Leo) Li, and other senior graduates shared industry insights and job hunting skills with the whole group. We learnt a lot from their stories and felt excited that we will be members of the alumni club family when we go back to China upon graduation.
If you asked me what the most impressive part of the trek was, I would definitely emphasize the company visits. The head offices of nine multinational companies we visited include Accenture, Amazon, AT Kearney, CITIC Securities, GE, Hillhouse Capital, JD.com, and L’Oreal. The companies cover industries including consulting, e-commerce, health care, finance, technology, and manufacturing. The information shared by professionals from all nine companies left profound impressions in my mind.
Specifically, the visit to JD.com, the Chinese leading e-commerce company, which is also proficient in high tech, resulted in an educational session and interviews for some of our members. The HR manager, Jora Pan, showed us the largest drone delivery system, infrastructure, and capability in the exhibition center. After, Colin Xuan shared his work experience at JD.com, and his story opened our eyes to the possibilities with this particular employer. What’s more exciting, JD.com expressed a strong interest in our graduates and invited four of our students for interviews!
I am so glad that trek participants gained knowledge about jobs in their fields of interest, grew their professional network, and prepared for the work of the future by joining the trek.
