Wonder Woman crushed the box office in 2017 and gave a generation of young girls and women a heroine to believe in. Diana Prince brings both strength and emotion. She can fight with the boys and giggle like a school girl. One doesn’t take away from the other. It’s the embodiment of both water and fire, light and dark, that makes Wonder Woman so iconic.
On the first day of my MBA orientation, we were asked how we wanted to be leaders? In a class of mostly men, how would I not only keep up but also distinguish myself? How could I lead as a woman?
At the end of the day, I went home, stood in a super hero stance, and watched Wonder Woman. And here are my 5 ways to lead like Wonder Woman:
- Know your worth.
Women have a bad reputation of saying “I think” or “I feel” before sharing a logical idea. A moment of pause to gather your thoughts comes off as hesitant and not prepared. When in reality, you are the expert so act like it. No one else has your skill set or your innovative ideas. Don’t let them get lost in the pause.
- Say no.
Trust me, Joe from accounting will find someone else to bring cookies to the office party. And that friend who only ever calls to talk about herself will survive a Friday night without you. Say no to things that don’t bring you joy. Everyone else (like my mother) has an idea of what I should be wearing, what I should be eating, where I should be working. It’s impossible to be all things to all people.
- Jump in.
That being said, when you’ve found that passionate YES, don’t just lean in, jump in. Be early. Stay late. Be enthusiastic and critical. Challenge yourself and others to simply be better. Wonder Woman didn’t wait for permission to cross No Man’s Land. She ran, literally jumping into the fire. What is the point of all the training and studying if you’re not willing to risk it all for what you believe in?
- Create a strong team.
No one is an island. Just like you can’t be all things to all people, you also can’t do everything. Create a team of passionate, smart, driven people and then step back. A great leader gives people the tools to succeed and then lets smart people do what they do best. Be authentic and vulnerable. Lean on your team through challenges and failures because they’ll help pull you across the finish line.
- Dance it out.
Throw on your favorite pop guilty pleasure and show your best Beyoncé impersonation. Don’t take yourself too seriously. If you have 3 minutes, dance and laugh. Celebrate with your team. Enjoy the process and shake off the stress. Shake it off, shake it off.
