For most MBA students, the purpose of going to a business school is not only to learn business concepts in a formal setting but also to learn how to implement the concepts discussed in class into real life business problems. Gavyn Ooi, Jenny Wu, and I (GMBA ’17 candidates) represented Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and placed 2nd in the Biopharma MBA Case Competition organized by Rutgers Business School. This case competition is one of the top 20 Global Business School Case Competitions across the United States and provides a unique opportunity to showcase participants’ skills in the health care sector.
The case involved developing a pricing defense strategy for ocrelizumab, a multiple sclerosis product recently developed by Genentech, in response to a 3rd-party assessment report from the Institute of Clinical and Economic Review (ICER).
The competition was a great opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired in business school into real life business problems and network with like-minded people. We connected with a lot of people from top business schools along with judges from big pharmaceutical and boutique consulting firms. Below I have listed the top 3 pro tips I have to offer:
- Putting in 40-50 additional work hours per week will pay off big; allowing you to structure your presentation well, which will showcase your rigorous preparation throughout the 30-minute, final presentation.
- Think about your team first and about yourself next. The team matters, so make sure that you have a diverse team and that each team member is motivated to solve the case.
- Utilize your time well and be ready to network with the people around you. Don’t forget to bring your business cards and name tags.
