Guanlin Hou graduated from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in December 2013 with an MS degree in Finance. In January 2014, he joined Argus Information and Advisory Services, A Verisk Analytics Company, the leading provider of analytics, information and solutions to consumer banks and their regulators. Currently, he is working in the Client and Modeling Solutions team at Argus’ New York office, and mainly leverages big data from the credit card industry to advise top credit card issuers, global payment processors, and major retailers for their marketing and business strategies.

What advice would you give new graduates?
Try to identify the fields you want to get in after graduation as soon as possible. Then, keep meeting new people in your fields and networking with them. They will offer helpful insights during your job search around the time you graduate.

What is one thing students should do while in school to prepare for a job?
Work with the Career Development Office to polish your professional brand and develop effective resumes, which you can hand out immediately once your contacts are willing to forward them and recommend you.

What is your favorite thing about your current job?
Dealing with big data to provide analytics solutions is a very hot spot in the business world nowadays. Meanwhile, it’s challenging to be in a consulting position.

What is the most influential experience you had at Carey?
Being a teaching assistant to help students for multiple courses, such as Investments, Corporate Finance, Microeconomics, Operations Management.

What three words would you use to define your time at Carey?
Challenging, Productive, Transformative
