Melissa Krauss is a 2010 graduate of the Carey MBA program with a focus in competitive intelligence. During her 15-year career with IBM she has held several software sales leadership positions most recently as the Worldwide Sales Executive for the Enterprise Content Management portfolio. Prior to joining IBM Melissa had an extensive career in health care in both hospital leadership and advanced nursing positions. Since graduation Melissa continues to return to Carey to provide career mentoring to MBA students.
What advice would you give new graduates?
Enjoy your work! The career you choose today is not a life sentence; figure out what about the job gives you energy and explore other jobs/careers with similar characteristics that will expand your knowledge. Making quantum changes in your career can be really scary but also very rewarding. Don’t be afraid to make dramatic changes.
What is one thing students should do while in school to prepare for a job?
Network! Network with your fellow students and professors but also with the visiting experts. Leverage internships and class projects to meet people in other fields and companies as another way to expand your network.
What is your favorite thing about your current job?
My job allows me to meet people all over the world and influence how technology is used to change the way businesses and governments provide services.
What is the most influential experience you had at Carey?
Exploring the ethical impact of business decision-making and the efforts that individuals and companies make to improve the global standard of living while growing a business.
What three words would you use to define your time at Carey?
Intimidating, Gratifying, Inspiring
