In today’s Alumni Career Week highlight, the focus is on Edward Stevenson, a Senior Consultant at Deloitte Consulting, LLP. His consulting duties focus on providing clients with expert strategy consulting, finance and resource management, public finance and budgeting advisory services, program financial management, operational management, and budget execution oversight.

Edward started his consulting career at Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc. and prior to that was an Active Duty Naval Officer. He served two tours as a Surface Warfare Officer onboard the guided missile destroyer USS PORTER (DDG-78), deploying twice to the Fifth and Sixth Fleet Area of Responsibility, in support of numerous operations to include Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terror. Upon completion of his sea tours, Edward was selected to serve as an All-Source Intelligence Analyst in the Office of Naval Intelligence, where he completed his Active Duty service in November of 2011.

Edward obtained an MBA from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in December 2011; a Graduate Certificate in Legislative Studies through the Government Affairs Institute at Georgetown University in September 2011; and a B.S. in Economics from the United States Naval Academy in May 2005. He is currently a PhD in Public Policy (Public Finance and Budgeting Concentration) candidate at George Washington University.

What advice would you give new graduates?
An MBA is a monumental step in your career ladder, but don’t forget about your career bridges as well. Always search for opportunities and be prepared to take on challenges. You never know where these paths will take you.

What is one thing students should do while in school to prepare for a job?
Build your network! Engage your professors, alumni, fellow students and expand your connections.

What is your favorite thing about your current job?
As a management consultant, I get to help clients solve their most pressing needs. There’s always a complication requiring a solution in this line of work!

What is the most influential experience you had at Carey?
While at Carey, I not only developed a network but I developed friendships that, 4 years later, span various fields of business and stretch quite literally from California to New England.

What three words would you use to define your time at Carey?
Set the standard!
