Who We Are

Our Philosophy

At the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, we express the philosophy behind our programs with the statement that our school is "where business is taught with humanity in mind."

The deliberate tension in this phrase goes to the heart of our approach to educating future generations of business leaders. The word “business” denotes discipline, accountability, value – the attributes of any outstanding business program and especially one created in the Johns Hopkins tradition of excellence.  Additionally, from its founding in 1876 as the first research university in the United States, Johns Hopkins has been an institution concerned with the larger world, particularly the most vexing problems of society – such as poverty, illness, pollution, ignorance. Thus the Carey School’s commitment to business programs that seek to address humanity’s greatest needs.

Humanistic entrepreneurs can help turn the tide on society’s greatest ills. Our purpose, ultimately, is to change the face of business and in the process make the world a healthier and more prosperous place. Indeed, a prosperous society is more than a moral imperative; it is also the best environment in which to conduct business.

We believe that the students in our programs will be among those leading the way to a transformed business environment – one in which the idea of serving humanity is not merely an afterthought but rather a guiding principle.
