The Program

The foundation of the INNoVATE™ program is that participants will actually start their own companies. Participants will work with either a technology they bring in themselves or one offered by local academic or government institutions such as NIH and NIST and will learn how to:

  • Evaluate the commercial potential of the technologies
  • Incorporate a business in the State of Maryland
  • Write a business plan
  • Establish start-up operations
  • Acquire funding
  • Patent their ideas
  • Identify potential commercial partners

The training includes:

  • Individual interaction with faculty advisors
  • Mentoring by experienced entrepreneurs and business experts
  • Networking events and panel presentations and discussions
  • Access to JHU resources
  • Access to other resources in the region that are valuable to entrepreneurs such as incubators, pro-bono legal advice, investor and government funding, and partners.

The Program Structure

Weekly classroom sessions are taught by instructors who are themselves successful life sciences entrepreneurs. Didactic sessions will address the fundamental elements of starting an innovation-based business, with interactive segments adding dimension and relevance as students apply the lessons learned to their own companies. Guest lecturers will include CEOs from local companies, regulators from FDA and relevant government groups, and funders from both private equity sources and government sponsored grant programs.

Once participants establish their companies through INNoVATE™, they will be encouraged to grow them locally through federal grants, or TEDCO (Maryland's Technology Development Corp). The access to funders, local business leaders, mentors, lawyers, accountants, government program directors, scientists and technical experts continues even after the curriculum is completed, providing a network of professionals with the knowledge and expertise to help fuel future success.
