Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

After you have reviewed this material, we recommend that you speak with an academic adviser about your goals. Advisers are available in person, by email, and by telephone. Please call 410-516-4234 or email careyinfo@jhu.edu.

How do I apply?

To apply to a degree or certificate program, please complete the admission application.  Students may download the application. (See Admission section, page 7, for more information.)  A completed application includes an essay, $70 application fee, official transcripts, and other program-specific materials. Application requirements, by program, are listed on the Application for Admission, and can be found online. Applications and all supporting documents should be sent to: Johns Hopkins University, Carey Business School, Office of Admissions, 6740 Alexander Bell Drive, Suite 110, Columbia, MD 21046-2100. For more specific instructions, please call the Office of Admissions at 1-800-GO-TO-JHU (1-800-468-6548).

What is considered in the admissions process?

We consider a wide range of factors when reviewing your application for admission, including prior academic achievements, quality of work and leadership experiences, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and, for some applicants, a personal interview. In addition, it is desirable for applicants to have at least two years of experience in the workplace-which could be in business, government, education or nonprofit organizations. Students who have less than two years of work experience will be considered on an individual basis, providing that they can demonstrate the capacity for leadership and academic success.  Specific requirements vary by program.

What happens after I submit my application?

Applications are reviewed on a continuous basis throughout the year. Please allow approximately four to six weeks for completion of the admissions process (from submission of a complete application packet to the admissions decision). Applicants to cohort groups should check with their program for specific application deadlines. International students should contact the Office of International and Student Services for specific application deadlines.

After admission materials are received, the Carey Business School reviews the application and makes all admission decisions.

When do classes begin? When do I register?

These dates can be found on the Web site's academic calendar (www.carey.jhu.edu), or on page 3 of this catalog.

Where can I take courses?

Our courses are offered at five locations in the Baltimore-Washington area: downtown Baltimore; the Homewood Campus; Columbia; Montgomery County (Rockville); and Washington, DC.

Do any programs require GMAT or GRE scores?

MBA and MBA/Information and Telecommunication Systems applicants are generally required to submit GMAT or GRE scores that are no more than five years old. Waivers to this requirement may be granted to those holding a graduate degree (for example, master's, doctorate, MD, law degree) from a regionally accredited college or university, and to those with a minimum of six years of progressive professional experience and leadership experiences. MS in Finance applicants are expected to demonstrate strong quantitative skills through prior academic coursework or GMAT/GRE scores. The MS in Real Estate full-time program requires the GMAT, GRE, or LSAT. The Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School GMAT code is KGB-B098, and the GRE code is 0834.

Are you accredited?

Johns Hopkins University is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Universities, the regional accrediting body for all colleges and universities in the mid-Atlantic region. Sometimes students ask if the Carey Business School is also accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and whether the program is included in annual ranking surveys. While the Carey Business School is an AACSB member and participates in a number of its activities, it has not sought AACSB accreditation.  The Carey Business School is currently reviewing this decision.  Because we have not sought AACSB accreditation, we are not included in the annual rankings, which focus on AACSB-accredited schools and programs.

How do I apply for financial aid or scholarships?

The Carey Business School offers a broad program of financial support for both full- and part-time students. For information on federal grants, low-interest loans, and scholarships, visit the financial aid section of the One Stop Student Services Web site, www.onestop.jhu.edu/financial.
