Program Overview

The undisputed strength of Johns Hopkins University lies in its science and health-based research and teaching enterprise. The Global MBA is rooted in this tradition and draws its distinctive strengths from it. It begins with a world view.

 

Program Overview

The course of study for the Global MBA is designed to immerse students in a variety of learning approaches and experiences, including discussion-driven seminars, active learning through fieldwork and internships, self-assessment and discovery, team-based projects, consulting engagements, and an innovative Discovery to Market project that challenges students to ready an actual discovery for commercialization. The two-year program equips students with the concepts, tools, and perspectives needed to understand global issues and act ethically in their leadership roles.

 

Orientation

Prior to the start of the first semester students from around the globe come together for a two-week orientation.  During this time, students build friendships, familiarize themselves with the Baltimore/D.C. community, and prepare to become a business student at a world class institution. 

Orientation involves:
•    Team-Building Workshops
•    Visits to Global Financial Institutions
•    Course in Business Statistics
•    Communications Workshops
•    Business Technologies Workshops
•    Community Service Projects
•    Professional Development

 

First Year

Semester 1

Students are exposed to business essentials through courses covering:
•    Financial Resources
•    People and Markets
•    Business Processes
•    Managerial Decision Behavior
•    Professional Development
•    Thought and Discourse
•    Innovation for Humanity


During the first semester students begin a three-semester seminar on Thought and Discourse.  In addition, preparation begins for the experiential learning component, Innovation for Humanity, which occurs during the January intersession.

January Intersession


Students spend three weeks in an emerging market working with local businesses and non-profit organizations as part of the Innovation for Humanity Project.  

Semester 2


The focus of this semester is on integrating business skills. The courses explore:
•    Digital Technology and Marketplaces
•    Networked Organizations and Organizational Processes
•    Strategic Options in Finance and Operations
•    Business Negotiation
•    Marketing

This semester also introduces students to one of the Global MBA’s distinctive aspects, the Discovery to Market project, as well as continues the Thought and Discourse Seminar and Professional Development classes.

 

Summer Internship

As students come to the end of the first year they may elect to pursue a Summer Internship.  Global MBA students have held internships all across the globe, with companies ranging from large multi-national corporations to local entrepreneurs.  

Students work closely with the Career Services office to ensure that the summer is spent in a rewarding and substantive summer position.

Second Year

The second year nurtures the development of expertise in functional areas of business and affords students the opportunity for professional specializations. Students are required to choose one, or a combination of two, of the following areas of study:

•    Healthcare
•    Finance
•    Marketing
•    Entrepreneurship

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to take a selection of innovatively designed electives.  These electives focus on particular industry segments and allow students to develop an expertise related to the traditional areas of strength within Johns Hopkins University. In the first semester, students continue to hone their skills in:

•    Thought and Discourse
•    Discovery to Market
•    Professional Development


In the second semester, students have the option to also design an independent study tailored to their interests, or, to take a unique faculty designed immersion colloquium.
