INFORMS SOCIETY FOR MARKETING SCIENCE (ISMS)
37th ISMS Marketing Science Conference (2015)
Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel

Hosted by:  Johns Hopkins Carey Business School
Co-Chairs:  Dipankar Chakravarti, Jian Ni and Shubhranshu Singh

We are delighted to report a very enjoyable and successful 37th ISMS Marketing Science Conference in Baltimore.

Hosted by the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, the conference started on Thursday, June 18 and ended with lunch on Saturday, June 20.

The conference is held under the auspices of the INFORMS Society for Marketing Science (ISMS) sub-branch. This year’s conference was attended by over 700 academic faculty and doctoral students), practitioners, and policy makers who share a strong interest in rigorous scientific research on marketing problems.

The conference featured close to six hundred research presentations by an impressive international cast of marketing scholars. A total of seventeen concurrent sessions of contributed and special topic papers included talks on traditional substantive topics such as advertising, branding and channels; market measurement and internet research; as well as newly emerging areas such as social media, mobile marketing, and marketing applications of decision neuroscience. The sessions were well-attended and a follow-up survey elicited many complimentary comments on the quality of the presented papers.

In addition to high quality scholarly presentations, the conference provided the attendees with a terrific networking opportunity. The coffee breaks and luncheons as well the welcome reception on the evening of June 18 provides a great opportunity to meet disciplinary colleagues – old and new. The gala dinner on the evening of June 19th was at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront hotel. This event provided more opportunity for conversation. The attendees celebrated the field’ vibrant scholarly traditions with awards recognizing the special accomplishments of both junior and senior scholars.

The weather was beautiful and allowed conference attendees to experience the ambience of Baltimore’s “happening” Harbor East and its many outstanding restaurants. The ingredients were perfect for a relaxing evening after a stimulating conference day.

On behalf of ISMS, the co-chairs thank you for your interest and for attending the 37th ISMS Marketing Science Conference. We also want to thank the fabulous staff at INFORMS and the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. This conference would not be possible without them.

ISMS Doctoral Consortium

The ISMS Doctoral Consortium preceded the main conference on Wednesday, June 17, 2015.

The consortium was attended by 96 doctoral students and nearly fifty guest faculty presenters.  The morning sessions at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront featured plenary sessions on the science and the art of publishing (led by the editors of the field’s major journals), publication patterns in Marketing Science as well as the reviewee and the reviewer roles.  Presentations by leading faculty in a set of breakout sessions outlined the frontiers of research in marketing science.

Following lunch at the Lebanese Taverna (sponsored by the University of Washington, Bothell), the venue moved to the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.  Two additional breakout sessions provided attending doctoral students with a strong sense of contemporary research on the discipline’s core topics as well as emerging areas of significant interest for marketing doctoral research.

The sessions were followed by a reception hosted by the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. The winners of the ISMS Dissertation Proposal Competition were recognized.  The reception also afforded the consortium attendees a great opportunity to meet and interact with the field’s leading scholars as well as peers aspiring to join this vibrant academic discipline.
